‘Wrestle the World’ returns to Pagosa Springs

“Wrestle the World” camp featuring world champion wrestler and University of Iowa assistant coach Terry Brands will be held at the Pagosa Springs High School, June 3-7.

The camp features both world-class instruction and team competitions throughout the week. Eighteen teams from Colorado have committed to attend, including Colorado 4A champion Broomfield High School, 3A champion Centauri High School, and New Mexico 5A champion Rio Rancho High School.

In the fall of 2008, Coach Brands left the Olympic Training Center coaching position to join his twin brother, Tom, as coaches at the University of Iowa. The Hawkeyes won their second consecutive NCAA title in March 2009, and Coach Brands will bring key coaches and athletes from the 2009 team to the camp as this year’s instructors.

In addition to Coach Brands, Jared Frayer, an outstanding wrestler for the University of Oklahoma and a current hopeful for a berth on the U.S. World Team will be on hand. Frayer is the strength and conditioning coach for the University of Iowa’s wrestling program. Assisting as camp counselors will be current University of Iowa wrestlers, including two-time All American Phil Keddy. In addition, several former Pagosa Springs high school athletes now competing at the college level will be on hand to instruct Pagosa wrestlers.

As the hosts, Pagosa Springs wrestlers are allowed to attend free of charge. Anyone entering the third grade next year, and all older school athletes, may attend, with approval from Coach Dan Janowsky, 264-4554.
