PWGA features ‘Blind Nine’ on league day

The Pagosa Women’s Golf Association featured a “Blind Nine” format for their league day, May 19.

A member of the pro shop staff drew two par threes, two par fives and five par fours from the Meadows and Pinon courses.

At the end of the round, all the participants were advised which holes had been drawn (Meadows nos. 1, 3, 6, 8 and 9; and Pinon nos. 3, 5, 6 and 9). Each player was to total her score for these holes, and subtract one-half her handicap for her net aggregate score for the aforementioned holes.

Josie Hummel captured first place with a 33.5; second went to Kay McKee with a 34.5; Loretta Campuzano placed third with a 35.5; Leslie Fluharty and Carrie Weisz tied for fourth, each with a 36.5; fifth went to Sheila Rogers with a 37; and Carole Howard and Shirley Hunter tied for sixth, each with a 37.5.

The association sent eight of its lowest handicap players to Aztec Hidden Valley Golf Club May 21, for its first team play event of the 2009 season.

The ladies competed against the Cortez Conquistador team and garnered 31 points net and 33.5 points net in the match play event.

Eight teams compete in the league representing the following golf clubs: Aztec Hidden Valley, Cortez Conquistador, Dalton Ranch, Hillcrest, Kirtland Riverview, Pagosa Springs, Pinon Hills and San Juan Country Club.

These teams play once a month in May and July, and twice a month in June, August and September.

Each team has eight members, and plays in four twosomes — all are paired according to handicaps.

Each hole of the 18 is played in match play format; one point net and one point gross are awarded per hole. If the hole is tied (gross or net), each team then receives one-half point. The total number of points any twosome can win is 18 points net and 18 points gross.

Representing Pagosa in the opener were: Barbara Sanborn, Audrey Johnson, Cherry O’Donnell, Carrie Weisz, Kay McKee, Josie Hummel, Bonne Hoover and Leslie Fluharty.

The next team play is slated for Thursday, June 4. Please sign up in the ladies’ locker room at the Pagosa Springs Golf Club, or contact team captain Cherry O’Donnell.
