Southwest Christian Writers Association 30th annual conference

The Southwest Christian Writers Association’s 30th annual conference “Write for His Glory: Children and Then Some,” will be held June 19-20, at Marvel Grange, in Marvel, Colo.

The keynote speaker will be Mona Hodgson, Mona Hodgson – Writer, Editor and Author. She will give four presentations relating to writing for the children’s market.

This award-winning author and speaker’s publishing credits include more than 600 pieces in 50-plus periodicals, contributions to 11 books for adults, and 28 children’s books, including her most recent ones, “Real Girls of the Bible: A Devotional for girls ages 8-12” (Zonderkidz) and six Zonderkidz I Can Read Books. Our group of talented local speakers include Dr. Joe Bowden, Ph.D., of Durango, a research chemist and technical writer, who is published in both secular and Christian fields. His session will focus on the trend toward self-publishing. 

Jean Campion was an instructor at Fort Lewis College for over 15 years, and will teach a workshop Tapping Into Your Childhood: Writing the Memoir, and has written two historical novels: “Minta Forever” and “Return to Rockytop.” Jean has also contributed to “Cup of Comfort” and “Chicken Soup for the Soul.”

Connie Peters of Cortez will co-conduct a class on building an article for the annual SWCA’s calendar. Her poetry, short stories and articles have appeared in several publications including “Focus on Your Child” newsletters, “Cup of Comfort Devotions for Mothers,” “Wounded by Words” (Susan Titus Osborn) and “Cup of Comfort for Families Touched by Alzheimer’s.” 

Conference attendees will have the opportunity to meet one-on-one with a critique specialist, to have their own writing critiqued, on Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. We then will have a free time followed by a light supper, followed by short piece and poetry readings from 7 to 8 p.m. For all you night owls, conference authors will be on hand for an informal discussion from 8 to 9 p.m. Saturday breakfast and registration begins at 7:30 a.m. Friday night’s light supper, Saturday’s breakfast and lunch are included in the $80 registration fee. Scholarships are available.
