Thanks to the cooperation of Wyndham Resorts, affordable youth tennis instruction will be offered this summer by the Town of Pagosa Springs Recreation Department.
Wyndham Resorts professional Dale Schwicker will again take the reins of the program, and this year’s season may include the opportunity for players to practice after the instructional sessions, provided parental supervision is present.
The program will consist of two sessions, one in June and one in July. Participants in all age divisions will meet twice a week at the Wyndham Resorts tennis courts for one-hour intervals.
Sessions for ages 7-10 will be held Mondays and Wednesdays from 11 a.m.-noon, and sessions for ages 11-13 will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11 to noon. A minimum of four participants per division will be required to conduct a session.
Registrations will be available at the recreation office May 11; registration will close May 28. Registrations will also be posted on the recreation department page at www.townofpagosasprings.com. The cost for session is $30.
The number of participants per session will be capped at eight in order to offer as much individual instruction as possible. If participation is greater than anticipated, sessions may be added on the same days from 10 to 11 a.m.
Since this is an introductory-level activity, the program will again use the USTA’s “Quick Start” format, which follows a “play to learn” rather than “learn to play” motto. Smaller courts, racquets and slower balls characterize the instruction.
Participants must have a tennis racquet and non-marking athletic or tennis shoes. Running shoes can cause injuries as they are not designed for lateral movement. All necessary equipment may be ordered from Schwicker at very reasonable costs; he can be contacted at 731-3363.
For more information contact Andy Rice, recreation supervisor, at 264-4151, Ext. 231.
Rosters for the coach-pitch division (ages 6-8) are being finalized and assessments for this year’s 9-10 and 11-14 divisions have been set for Tuesday, May 12 at the high school ball fields.
Participants and coaches in the 9-10 division should report to the fields at 5:20 p.m.; the assessment will run until approximately 6:45.
Participants and coaches in the 11-4 bracket should report at 6:45 p.m.; the assessment for this division will last until approximately 8.
All players intending to participate in the assessment should come prepared for basic throwing, hitting and fielding drills, and bring a baseball glove and athletic shoes.
The draft for the 9-10 and 11-14 divisions will be held Thursday, May 14 at 6 p.m. in Town Hall. All head coaches should attend.
Games in all divisions will not begin until after Memorial Day; the season will run through early July. For more information on this year’s program, call 264-4151, Ext. 231 or 232.
