The Mountain High Gardeners Club has been active for several years in our community, and our members’ enthusiasm always grows with the beginning of a new project.
Some of our previous projects include: planting flower pots at the Ruby M. Sisson Library; buying and donating several gardening books to the library; establishing the Senior Center garden; planting the Bell Tower garden; working on the Hospice garden; and donating money for landscaping to Habitat for Humanity.
Our newest project will be designing and planting the beds along Lewis Street. This project will be done over the next few years and with the professional guidance of landscape architect Karin Freeman and Jim Miller, Pagosa Springs superintendent of parks and recreation. The first stage will be planting the beds nearest U.S. 160, at the west entrance to Lewis Street. The soil will be amended and a few rocks added for decorative purposes before the initial foundation planting occurs.
We wish to thank Karin Freeman for her landscape design, and Jim Miller who will be amending the soil and purchasing many of the plants and supervising the project, and the Parks and Recreation Department for doing such a wonderful job maintaining our parks. We also wish to thank all members of the Mountain High Gardeners Club for their enthusiastic support and work, Pagosa Feed and Nursery Store for their help with plant purchases, and the Methodist Church for their commitment to this project. We would appreciate any help that businesses and members of the community can give us with this project, either with donations, adopting a planting site, or a commitment of caring for a bed that has been planted. If you would like to help in any way, contact Mary at 731-1288, Frances at 731-2012, or Shelley at 264-2574.
For those who would like to join the Mountain High Gardeners Club, we meet the third Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the Archuleta County Extension Office. Notice of our meetings is published in the PREVIEW Calendar. We welcome all those who have an interest in gardening regardless of gardening experience.
