Looking like two different teams within 24 hours, Pirates soccer traded a loss for a win, losing 4-0 to the 5A Durango Demons JV on Monday but winning 11-1 against the Ignacio Bobcats.
“We played even for the first 30 minutes,” said coach Lindsey Kurt-Mason regarding his team’s loss Monday. “It was a mid-field battle but, then, we began to lose our transition game.”
The Demons took early initiative with a score just eight minutes into the game despite a strong defensive showing by the Pirates. Unfortunately, the defense fell apart in the second period, with the Demons scoring at 45:30, 58:35, and 68:55 into the game, handing Pagosa a 4-0 loss.
The following day, on the momentum of a stellar performance by sophomore standout Sydney Smith (scoring five goals and one assist for the game), the Pirates looked like an entirely different team.
The first Pagosa goal came just five minutes into the first period with a powerful shot from sophomore Nicole Hunt (three goals for the game). Smith took her first goal just two and half minutes later, followed by another goal from Hunt at 14:50. A header at 16:53 from junior Natalie Erickson (two goals for the game) took the Pirates to a 4-0 lead for the half.
Hunt again took the leadoff goal just two minutes into the second period off an assist from Kassidy Smith, who scored her own goal just a minute later. Erickson scored again at 57:00 into the game off an assist from senior Nichole Kazarinoff. From there, it was almost entirely Sydney Smith’s show, as she scored at 63:00, 73:00, 75:00 and a final goal at 78:00 into the game.
The lone Bobcat goal came off a penalty kick at 61:00 after one of the Ignacio players was pulled down by a Pirate defender in the Ignacio box. Pirate goalkeeper Alyssa Laydon nearly made the save, and managed two saves for the game.
“We came off pretty well from a tough game the day before,” said Kurt-Mason, “We played the wings well.”
With a 4-7 record that inaccurately reflects the potential of a young team, the Pirates face a tight schedule the next week, starting with a road game in Ridgway on Friday. The Pirates travel to Telluride for a match on Monday and then return home for a match at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Golden Peaks Stadium for a game against the Bayfield Wolverines.
