Fees imposed for late vehicle registrations

With the passage of SB09-108, owners of vehicles subject to taxation that are required to be registered in April and after will be subject to late fees up to $100.

The late fee for the first month (or portion thereof) after the 30 day grace period expires is $25 and an additional $25 for each month (or portion of a month) thereafter up to $100.

For example, if a vehicle registration expired in April and the grace period ended in May, late fees would be imposed as follows.

If one registers the vehicle in June a $25 late fee will be imposed; July, $50; August, $75; September, $100; October, $100.

Vehicles that have been issued temporary registrations are also subject to the late fee, although late fees will be assessed the day after the temporary permit registration expires.

For example, if a temporary registration expires June 3 and the vehicle is registered between June 4 and June 30, a $25 late fee will be imposed; July 1 to July 31, $50; Aug. 1 to Aug 31, $75, Sept. 1 to Sept. 30, $100; and Oct. 1 to Oct. 31, $100.

Individuals who move to Colorado from out of state and do not register their vehicle within 90 days of residency will be charged late fees up to $100. Vehicles purchases by Colorado residents will be assessed late fees 61 days after the purchase date if the vehicle is not registered.

Vehicles that are used to operate a commercial business as part of the normal operation of the business are exempt late fees if the vehicles has not been operated on any public highway in Colorado for one full registration period.

The owner of a vehicle who is active military serving outside of Colorado when the registration grace period expires, if the vehicle has not been operated on any public highway in Colorado between the time the registration period expired, including the grace period and the time the vehicle is registered will be exempt from late fees.
