The Amazing Race comes to Pagosa Springs Monday

Pagosa Springs gets a shot at the big time this week when Phil Keoghan, host of CBS’s The Amazing Race, will ride his bicycle into town on Monday afternoon, accompanied by a CBS camera crew.

Having started his cross-country journey in Los Angeles on March 28, Keoghan is cycling across America to raise awareness and money for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Expected to last 40 days, Keoghan intends to end his journey in New York on May 7, a ride that averages 100 miles per day for a total of over 3,500 miles.

Expected to arrive in Pagosa Springs around 4 p.m. on Monday, Keoghan will be followed by a CBS camera crew that is documenting the entire ride with extensive daily coverage at every stop he makes. Keoghan will spend the night in Pagosa Springs to prepare for a grueling ride up Wolf Creek Pass the following day.

On that morning, the community is encouraged to come together to give Keoghan a rousing farewell with a send-off party and fund-raiser scheduled in Town Park at 7:30 a.m. April 7. The event will include a pancake breakfast, provided by the Kiwanas Club, along with live music, hot air balloons and a chance to meet Keoghan. Attendees of the event are encouraged to make donations, with all proceeds going towards the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Residents choosing to attend the event should also bring lawn chairs, as seating will be extremely limited.

“We would love to see the community show Phil that we support his efforts,” said Town Tourism Committee Coordinator Jennie Green, “We hope we’ll have a lot of people out there to give him a warm welcome, a friendly send-off, and make him want to come back and visit again.”

Following the fund-raiser, Keoghan will start the next leg of his journey by heading east from Town Park on Hermosa Street and then out U.S. 160 to Wolf Creek. Accompanied by members of the Wolf Creek Wheels Club, Keoghan and his fellow riders will have aid stations and cheering sections east of town to cheer Phil and the other riders on as they summit Wolf Creek.

“This is a great way to come together and show the CBS audience the spirit of Pagosa Springs,” Green said.
