9Health Fair — the power of volunteerism

Underscoring the power of volunteerism, 9Health Fair announced that 19,000 community volunteers served more than 91,000 people in 155 communities in Colorado, Wyoming and Nebraska during the 2008 9Health Fair. Doctors, registered nurses, nurse practitioners, emergency medical technicians and trained phlebotomists comprised almost 50 percent of 9Health Fair’s seasonal volunteer-base.

The fair in Pagosa springs is set for Pagosa Springs, Saturday, April 4, at the high school, from 7 a.m. to noon; to find other site locations and times contact 9Health Fair at 1 (800) 332-3078 or at their Web site, www.9HealthFair.org.

Last year, more than 87,000 people took advantage of 9Health Fair’s $30 blood chemistry screening, which analyzes the body’s major organ functions. More than 24,000 men had a Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) screening, 1,055 people utilized Colon Cancer screening and 51,69 participants had a blood count screening that checks for anemia, liver disease, certain cancers and the body’s ability to fight infection.

“We are very pleased that so many people in and around Colorado took responsibility for their own health and attended their local 9Health Fair,” said Jim Goddard, president and CEO of 9Health Fair. “With health care costs rising at alarming rates, 9Health Fair is the easiest, most affordable way for anyone over 18 to receive such comprehensive, credible baseline data about their health status and to identify possible health issues.”

Out of the approximately 15,000 participants who qualified and received a finger stick glucose screening at 9Health Fair, 40 percent reported higher than normal glucose levels (100 and above). Over 8,000 individuals received a bone density screening, which informed people about the risk for osteoporosis, and over 4,000 participants took advantage of a Cardio Risk Assessment screening, which determines a person’s heart disease risk in the next 10 years.

Within 72 hours of their 9Health Fair visit, 1,482 people received a phone call from 9Health Fair’s team of volunteer RNs and doctors, notifying them of a critical or alert situation needing immediate attention.

“While 9Health Fair encourages participants to follow up with their primary care provider to discuss their results,” Goddard said, “we are also very grateful that our dedicated medical volunteers personally contact people with serious health issues so that they can seek further diagnosis and treatment right away.”

With a sole mission of promoting health awareness and encouraging individuals to assume responsibility for their own health, since 1980 9Health Fair has impacted more than 1.7 million lives.
