Katie Armbrecht and Emily Bryant from the Pagosa Lakes Porpoises attended the Western Slope Championships in Montrose last weekend, featuring the Western Slope’s top swimmers.
Armbrecht won high point in the 13-14 age group, with Emily taking second, eight points behind her. Armbrecht and Bryant combined for four new team records and six first-place finishes between them. Both competed against swimmers from 11 other teams.
Both Armbrecht and Bryant have been invited to participate in the Age Group Sectional Meet, to compete against swimmers from teams from the Four Corners region, April 3-5, in Farmington. They will swim for the Western Colorado Team comprised of the best swimmers from Pagosa, Durango, Grand Junction, Montrose, Aspen, Steamboat Springs, Gunnison and Craig. Both girls are trying to qualify for the Western Zone meet in Maui, Hawaii, which will take place starting Aug. 4.
Also, Armbrecht, along with Erica Pitcher, Samara Hernandez and Kelsea Anderson, just completed an excellent season swimming for Durango High School.
All four participated in the league championships with Pitcher qualifying for the Colorado Class 5A state in two relay events. She also missed making the state championship meet in the 100-yard Butterfly by .3 seconds.
Currently Dane Murdock and Austin Miller have been practicing seven times a week, which includes early mornings before school, to participate with the Durango High School Boys Swim Team. Both should have an excellent opportunity at lettering in their freshman year. Dylan and Keegan Caves are also swimming for Durango.
