Faced with a seasoned squad packed with seniors, the Pirate girls found themselves overwhelmed at home last Friday against conference rival Bayfield.
“They beat us on the board,” said Coach Wes Lewis, “We gave up too many second and third chances. They got too many second and third chances down court.”
Taking the floor with a 2-3 conference record, the Pirates hoped to reconcile a previous loss to the Wolverines (4-1 in conference), Jan. 30 in Bayfield, and gain ground in the league.
Unfortunately, the Pirates were overwhelmed by Bayfield’s aggressive style and effective full-court press. Harrassed up and down the court, the Pirates found themselves down 5 at the end of the first quarter with Bayfiled holding a 14-9 lead.
Down 12 points with 3 minutes left in the second quarter, the Pirates felt the effects of the Wolverine’s tenacious bite. Unable to snag defensive rebounds while losing too many offensive rebounds, the Pirates left the floor behind 18-29 at the half, outscored 9-15 for the period.
The third period allowed Pagosa some room to regroup and the Pirates managed to outscore Bayfield by a single point, 12-11 for the quarter. Unfortunately, difficulties with ball control and muffed passes that plagued the Pirates the entire game were pronounced in the final quarter, allowing the Wolverines a 26-10 scoring edge for the period and handing the Pirates a heartbreaking 40-66 loss.
Mistakes aside, the Pirates found themselves hapless at the hands of an extremely effective Wolverine full-court press.
“They put a lot of pressure on us at the perimeter,” said Lewis, “I didn’t feel like we attacked the basket. We didn’t get the ball in the paint on either the dribble or the pass.”
Senior Allison Hart led the Pirates with 14 points and 8 rebounds. Sophomore Mary Brinton was second with 8 points, followed by senior Shelby Stretton with 5 points for the game.
The Pirates are hosted by Monte Vista tonight at 6 p.m. at the Intermountain League tournament. Should the Pirates defeat Monte Vista, they will play Saturday at 6 p.m. against the winner of tonight’s match between Centauri and Bayfield.
