Gary J. McDonald died Saturday, Feb. 14, 2009, after a long illness with lung disease. He had been living at Pine Ridge Extended Care Center for the past several years. Gary leaves behind his wife, Lauren, and two children, Elise 20 and Benjamin 13. He also has two living brothers in New Jersey, Gene and Stephen. He was 64 years old.
Gary moved out to the West in the late 1970s and fell in love with the Native American Indian Art. He lived in Santa Fe for over 20 years before moving with his family to Pagosa Springs in 2001. Gary was known in the Santa Fe area for his folk art paintings on furniture, which were sold at the Santa Fe Flea Market for many years.
Some of his work has been displayed at the Smithsonian Institute and the University of Chicago and he had articles written up about his artwork in the Santa Fean Magazine. Gary was well recognized around town by his long blond ponytail and headband. He will be long remembered by all the beautiful paintings he left behind, for so many of us to enjoy.
His family extends a heartfelt thanks to all of the wonderful staff at Pine Ridge for taking such good care of Gary for all those years.
