We are issuing a call to artists for the Pagosa Springs Arts Council’s sixth annual Juried Exhibition: A Regional Art Competition.
The submission deadline — artwork received — is April 24. The competition is open to all artists 18 years or older residing in the Four Corners states of Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico and Utah. It is open to artists working in any media excluding functional crafts, photography, video, film, other electronic works and performance or installation art.
Cash awards will be $1,500 total for first, second and third places and People’s Choice Award.
The juror will be Laura Murphy, an adjunct instructor at Adams State College in Alamosa, where she teaches courses in art appreciation and women artists in art. In 2000, Murphy earned her B.A. in art, Summa cum Laude from Adams State College. In 2006 she achieved her M.F.A. in open media: fibers and ceramics, Magna cum Laude from Adams State College. Murphy has been showing her artwork since 1984. Some of her most recent exhibits include the Midwinter Fest Juried Exhibit, Monte Arts Council, Monte Vista, Colo., in which she received first place for her ceramic and fiber artwork, and the juried San Luis Valley Folk Arts and Fiber Festival Exhibit, Monte Vista,. Primarily a painter for the past 20 years, Murphy now considers herself a mixed media artist.

Drawing in perspective
Drawing with Randall Davis will be held on Saturday, Feb. 14, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the community center Arts and Crafts Room. Students will be drawing a weathered barn and Randall will address perspective in an exercise before beginning the drawing. The class is appropriate for all levels — beginners as well as advanced. You will leave the class with a completed drawing.
Cost is $35 and you need to call the Arts Council at 264-5020 to pre-register and obtain a supply list.
The PSAC Gallery in Town Park is on its winter schedule, normally open Thursdays from noon to 4 p.m. The gallery is not staffed on a regular basis but voice mail and e-mail messages will be checked regularly so please leave a message and someone will get back to you as soon as possible. The Photography Club meets the second Wednesday of each month during the club year from September through May at 6 p.m. Interested photography enthusiasts are welcome to attend at no charge for the first meeting.

Plein Air Painters
Plein Air Painters meet the third Thursday of the month at 10 a.m. at a predetermined location. Painters who work in any media are welcome. It’s a wonderful opportunity to share tips, ideas and resources. Our next painting session is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 19, at the community center. If the weather is nice, we go outside to paint.
If the weather is bad we will paint in the Arts and Crafts Room. Please keep in mind that turpentine based painting materials can not be used in the Community Center. Please contact Jean Shah for more information, at 264-0188 or e-mail: email@example.com.
The Pagosa Springs Arts Council sponsors and manages workshops in the Arts and Crafts Room at the community center. From the outset, the Arts Council has been a partner and supporter of the center.
We started the workshops in 2002 and they have grown substantially since that time. Workshops provide those who want to teach a venue in which to do so and, at the same time, give our residents a place to learn something new whether it is watercolor, acrylic, oil, drawing, photography or the like. The space also provides a home for the Photo Club, Watercolor Club and a meeting location for various clubs.

New members and volunteers
Started in 1988 the Pagosa Springs Arts Council, a non-profit organization, was conceived and developed to, in part, promote the awareness of the vast array of local artistic talent, provide educational and cultural activities in the community, sponsor exhibits and workshops by local and regional artists and encourage and support continued appreciation and preservation of the aesthetic beauty of Pagosa Springs. If becoming involved with such a dynamic organization excites you, we hope that you will consider becoming a member or perhaps even volunteer.
