Pirate wrestlers get first IML win

Following a jam-packed start to the new year’s schedule, the Pirate wrestling team got a respite, with one dual meet in a week’s time — the first Intermountain League dual of the season — and a 44-19 win over rival Monte Vista.

The IML regular season title is determined on the basis of the record in a series of dual meets, one against each league opponent.

With only four teams in the IML this season — Pagosa, Monte, Centauri and Bayfield — every win bears weight.

Pagosa scored the first six points of the meet getting a forfeit at 145 pounds.

Joe DuCharme returned to action after missing several bouts with a neck injury, and the senior returned in the same winning form he left, scoring a 20-5 technical fall over Aaron Heredia, at 171.

Mike Smith added yet another victory to his record, fighting at 189. Smith beat Edgar Borunda 14-1.

Pagosa earned another easy six at both 285 and 112.

Steven Smith started a Pirate pin parade to end the event. Smith won by fall at 119 over Donovan Valdez at 1 minute, 44 seconds.

Steven Smith, WBF 1:44 over Donovan Valdez.

Caleb Pringle followed up with a pin at 130, sticking Tony Martinez at 5:04.

Cole Mastin, got a pin at 135 to end the Pagosa scoring, putting Jody Stuckey’s shoulders down at 5:44.

“This was our first league dual,” said Coach Dan Janowsky. “We both experimented with our lineups a little bit, to try to get a matchup advantage. They weren’t the lineups either team will use for the regional or state tournaments. It worked in our favor a little bit.

“I liked the way our seniors wrestled. Some of the others had a bit of stage fright that negatively affected them, but they’re growing out of that, I think. Silas Thompson put up a good fight at 103.”

Tonight, the Pirates make the first of two trips in the week to La Jara.

Pagosa and the highly-ranked Falcons clash in their IML dual meet this evening; Saturday the team returns for a dual meet tournament — the last tournament of the regular season.
