Youth basketball program to hold draft, assessments

Registration for the upcoming 9-10 and 11-12 youth basketball seasons has ended and the assessments for these age brackets have been set for Tuesday, Jan. 6 in the Community Center gymnasium.

All players and head coaches who registered for participation in these leagues should report to the gym according to the following schedule:

In the 9-10 division, all participants having last names beginning with A-L should report to the gym from 5:30 to 6 p.m. All participants in the 9-10 division with last names M-Z should report to the gym from 6 -6:30 p.m.

In the 11-12 division, all participants having last names beginning with A-L should report to the gym from 6:45-7:15 p.m.; all participants with last names M-Z should report from 7:15-7:45 p.m.

The draft for both divisions will be held Wednesday, Jan. 7 at 6 p.m. in Town Hall; all head coaches in each division should attend.

All players should arrive ready to participate in dribbling, shooting and passing drills.

On a related note, the recreation department is in need of head coaches for the 11-12 division and would like to hear from anyone interested in coaching a team.

If interested, contact Andy Rice at 264-4151, Ext. 231.

Skate pond

The skate pond at the River Center is tentatively open for the season. Conditions permitting, the hours of operation are from dawn to 10 p.m. daily, except on those nights when ice maintenance operations are being performed.

Resurfacing will be scheduled for Monday and Thursday evenings unless weather conditions and snow-removal priorities prevent the parks crew from maintaining the ice. On resurfacing nights, the pond will be closed at 6 p.m. A minimum ice thickness of four inches will be regularly monitored, but thin spots can occur, and an effort to mark them with cones will be made.

Pond users are requested to leave the cones in place. We also ask that no foreign objects be thrown onto the ice. The pond will remain open until safety concerns require its closure.

Christmas tree recycling

The Town of Pagosa Springs is once again conducting a Christmas tree recycling program. Anyone wishing to participate in this program can take trees to be recycled to South Pagosa Park on South 8th Street between now and the end of March.

Look for the signs directing recyclers to the collection area. To ensure that trees can be properly recycled, please remove all lights and ornaments before leaving your tree.

The parks department will chip the collected trees into mulch to be used for landscaping projects during the coming season.

Indoor soccer

Indoor soccer will resume in January, with the first session scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 3, from 10 a.m.-noon.

This free “pick-up” style program for players ages 5-and-over will consist of informal scrimmages, practice and instruction. Non-marking athletic shoes are required; skating shoes are not recommended.

Sessions will be held Saturdays in the Community Center gym when space is available; the season is expected to run through late March or early April.

Indoor soccer balls and goals will be provided; outdoor balls will not be permitted. Shin guards are highly recommended for all participants.

For more information on this program, contact Matt Bowdridge at 903-8663, or call the recreation office at 264-4151, Ext. 232.
