Start the new year with introductory classes at SHY RABBIT

There are still a few spaces remaining in the January and February sessions of WORK-Shops@SHY RABBIT, but they won’t last long.

These introductory offerings include Basic Ceramic Techniques and Hand-building I, Ceramics from the Potter’s Wheel I and Printmaking without a Press I.

WORK-Shops@SHY RABBIT are held in one of two spacious 1,000 square-foot mixed media studios, and are instructed by professional artist, D. Michael Coffee. Classes are kept small for personalized attention

Basic Ceramic Techniques and Hand-building I is a two-day introductory workshop that will focus on hand forming, texturing, and assembling clay, all without the use of a potter’s wheel or other equipment. Students are introduced to coil, pinch, and slab methods of construction.

Beginners and those with no experience are encouraged to take this class. Those with clay experience will benefit from learning and practicing unique techniques developed over the course of more than 15 years by Coffee.

This workshop will run from 10 a.m.–4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 31 and Feb. 1. The workshop fee is $215, and includes all materials, glazes, firings, and a tool kit that participants may keep for future use.

Ceramics from the Potter’s Wheel I is a five-week introductory course designed for novice and experienced potters alike. It will establish good working fundamentals that will provide a foundation for continuing work on the wheel and advancement, if desired.

Participants will learn the concepts of wedging, centering, opening, pulling and shaping forms, trimming and finishing, and glazing. Classes will run on Wednesday evenings, 5:30-7:30 p.m., beginning Jan. 14 and continuing through Feb. 11. A separate glazing session is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 28, 10 a.m.-1 p.m.

The workshop fee is $275, and includes all materials, glazes, firings, and a tool kit that participants may keep for future use. Open studio time is also included in the course fee to encourage participants to practice on the wheel in between sessions. Studio time is available Thursday through Sunday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. throughout the five-week course.

Printmaking without a Press I is a two-day introductory workshop utilizing a unique hand-pressed printing process called “Reductive Ink”™, designed and developed by D. Michael Coffee.

This workshop is high in content and uses inexpensive, low-tech materials that can be easily used in a home studio environment. It is designed for those with or without printmaking experience, and for those that simply want to explore and expand upon their creativity.

The workshop will run from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 7 and 8. The workshop fee is $215, and includes all course materials.
