The Pagosa Springs Pirate girls captured third place last weekend at the Buena Vista Basketball Tournament.
Following a narrow loss to Class 4A Alamosa, 45-41, on Friday, the Pirates soundly defeated 4A Battle Mountain, 46-22, on Saturday.
In the Friday game against the Mean Moose, the Pirates led 8-6 after the first quarter, but trailed Alamosa 21-12 at halftime.
After three quarters Alamosa’s lead was 33-30 and, at the end of the game, Alamosa had only the scant 4-point advantage.
In the Alamosa game, senior Allison Hart led the Pirate scoring with 15 points, followed by Breezy Bryant with 11 and Mary Brinton with 9.
As starters, the coach Friday called on Shelby Stretton, Courtney Guilliams, Breezy Bryant, Hart and Victoria Espinosa .The only difference on Saturday was that Megan Bryant started in place of Espinosa.
“Our rebounding was not good in the Alamosa game,” said Coach Wes Lewis. “The leaders in rebounds against Battle Mountain were much better. Allison Hart had eight boards, followed by Breezy Bryant with five and Courtney Guilliams with four.” Bryant led the Pirate scorers against Battle Mountain, with 11 points.
“We took care of the ball on Saturday, having only 15 turnovers against Alamosa and we won big against Battle Mountain,” the coach said.
“We need to make 70 percent of our free throws. We only had 12 of 20 on Friday and we lost by just four points. And we hit 12 of 29 free throws on Saturday. That is not good enough,” said Lewis.
“Megan Bryant is leading us in rebounding and Victoria Espinosa is leading us in steals when we are pressing,” the coach said. The Pirates used a three quarter press in both games at Buena Vista.
Friday and Saturday, the Pirates will host the Wolf Creek Classic at the Pagosa high school gym. Other teams at the tourney include 3A Gunnison, 3A Buena Vista and 4A Cortez.
On Friday the Pirates face Gunnison at 6:30 p.m. Gunnison is dominated by a group of senior starters, according to Lewis.
“If we play our best we can win,” said the coach.
