The Pagosa Nordic Club will hold a public meeting at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 9, at Community United Methodist Church, on Lewis Street.
The club is seeking input and volunteers to help move a winter trails grooming project into the future. (Attendees are asked to bring a canned food donation in exchange for the use of the meeting space.)
The newly-formed, nonprofit club consists of volunteers whose mission is “to enhance winter recreational opportunities by maintaining accessible groomed winter trails for skate skiing, traditional cross-country track skiing and snowshoeing, and to encourage and promote the use of these winter trails through education, marketing and events.”
The club will seek funding, purchase grooming equipment and organize volunteers to groom and maintain many established trails and seasonal roads within the Town of Pagosa Springs park system, U.S. National Forest Service trail system, and existing sports fields and complexes adjacent to public school campuses.
Groomed trails for cross-country skiing, skate skiing and snowshoeing are growing in popularity and could be a welcome addition to current amenities, attracting a wide range of users. For example, a recent donation from the San Juan Outdoor Club for the purchase of equipment for fourth-grade students will expose a new generation to cross-country skiing.
Through field surveys, the club has selected established trails and seasonal roads intended to provide winter recreation opportunities in close proximity to homes, work places and lodging. The winter trails grooming project could have many positive economic, social and lifestyle benefits for our community by providing new amenities for our residents and creating a unique niche for tourists.
