Pirates to scrimmage Saturday, season starts Dec. 5

With practice begun in earnest at the end of the football season, and a scrimmage looming this weekend, the Pagosa Springs Pirate boys’ basketball team is preparing for what Coach Jim Shaffer expects will be a more successful season than last, when the team went 6-16.

The Pirate squad has four lettermen returning from last year’s team. The returning lettermen include 6-7 John Jewell, 6-3 Taylor Shaffer, 6-1 Dakota Ross and 6-0 Sackett Ross.

Others expected to join the Pagosa varsity this year are Zach Lucero, Tyson Ross, Austin Jones, Andrew Rite, Jordan Caler, Curtis Lewis and Don Ames.

According to Coach Shaffer, “We have four veterans who have the potential of scoring in double figures this season: Sackett Ross, Taylor Shaffer, John Jewell and Dakota Ross.”

Shaffer singled out Tyson Ross, Lewis, Caler, Lucero and Sackett Ross as the players with the best potential for scoring from outside, with three-point shots.

“Our strongest rebounders this year will probably be Dakota Ross, Sackett Ross, John Jewell and Taylor Shaffer,” the coach said.

The team will scrimmage 5A Durango and 2A Sanford this Saturday at the Durango High School gym.

The first regular season games for the Pirates will be Dec. 5-6 in the Buena Vista Tournament.

The first home games for the Pirates will be Dec. 12-13 in the Wolf Creek Classic.

The next home game for the Pirates following the Classic will be against Salida on Dec. 20.

After the Christmas holiday break, the Pirates will have a road game Jan. 9 at Salida and follow with contests on Jan. 16 against. Monte Vista and Jan. 17 against Alamosa.

Coach Shaffer reminded Pirate fans there will only be four teams in the Intermountain Basketball League this year — Pagosa Springs, Bayfield, Monte Vista and Centauri — with Ignacio dropping to Class 2A.
