Drivers Education returns to Pagosa Springs

Drivers Education has come back to Pagosa Springs.

For some time now, the nearest place offering the Driver Education Classroom course was Durango. Now, with the help of David Hamilton, Pagosa Springs High School principal, Four Corners Safety Association is giving the class at the high dchool three times a year.

The course covers Colorado State laws, defensive driving, insurance considerations, talks from local and State police, and general information that should help young drivers take on the responsibilities of the road with greater knowledge and competence. It also includes six hours of behind-the-wheel training from a professional instructor to help them get some initial driving skills and prepare them for the licensing test.

In the past, those wanting to get the equivalent of the course have been able to take an online class and were required to log an extra 12 hours of driving with their parent/guardian. Instead of that additional 12 hours, Colorado law requires any teen living within 30 miles of Pagosa who gets their permit before the age of 15 1/2 years to have the six hours of behind-the-wheel instruction before they get their license.

The next class will take place at the high school Dec. 13, 20, 22 and 23, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day

Cost is $275, which includes the six hours of behind-the-wheel instruction.

Also, for those who prefer to take the driver’s licensing test here in Pagosa rather than in Durango, the test is offered as well.
