Pagosa Springs Realtor Gloria Haines received a Good Neighbor Award from the Colorado Association of Realtors (CAR) Oct. 29, for her work with Loaves and Fishes — a local free lunch program held every Thursday 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church Parish Hall in downtown Pagosa Springs.
Because of the award, Loaves and Fishes was presented with a $1,000 donation from CAR.
Loaves and Fishes was founded in 2004 by five women in Pagosa Springs – Haines, Joanne Irons, Jane Lomasney, Muriel Cronkhite and Cynthia Sharp.
The intent of the program was to bring the community together once a week to enjoy a hot meal and fellowship, where all the meals would be prepared and served by volunteers. The program now serves anywhere from 150 to 225 meals weekly.
Haines has been instrumental in picking up food donations at local establishments and in cooking, serving and coordinating volunteer efforts on a regular basis. She has also been active in applying for grants and fund-raising activities to help offset the cost of staple items needed to maintain the program.
