Season winding down for golfers

Playing the 18-hole combination of Pinon/Ponderosa Sept. 2, 16 players competed in a 9 easiest holes format, subtracting 1/2 of each individual’s handicap. The nine holes used were numbers 2, 3, 5, 7 and 8 on the Pinon course and numbers 1, 2, 3 and 8 on the Ponderosa course. Winners were: first place, Carrie Weisz; second, Bev Hudson; third, with a five-way tie, Leslie Fluharty, Cherry O’Donnell, Barbara Sanborn, Loretta Campuzano and Bonnie Hoover.

Twenty players competed Sept. 9 in a Ryder Cup format playing the entire 27 holes. The “red” team consisted of the two-lady pairings of Sho Jen Lee/Julie Pressley, Cherry O’Donnell/Josie Hummel, Doe Stringer/Kay McKee, Bonnie Hoover/Carol Barrows, and Barbara Sanborn/Sue Martin. The “blue” team pairings were Audrey Johnson/Carrie Weisz, Bev Hudson/Nancy Mackenson, Cindy Simpson/Leslie Fluharty, Claudia Johnson/Donna Gregory, Jane Day/Kathy Giordano.

After completing nine holes of alternate shot on the Pinon course, nine holes of individual match play (one player from each “red” team twosome vs. one player from each “blue” team twosome) on the Ponderosa course, and nine holes of better of the two net balls on the Meadows course, the “red” team was victorious (99) over the “blue” team (82). A rematch will certainly occur in 2009. The pairings were based upon handicap/indexes of Aug. 29, 2008.

The 4-corners lady team play was held Sept. 11 at Pinon Hills Golf Course in Farmington, N.M., with the Pagosa Springs team competing against the ladies from Pinon Hills.

The two-lady pairings from Pagosa were Barbara Sanborn/Audrey Johnson, Carrie Weisz/Bev Hudson, Doe Stringer/Cindy Simpson, Kay McKee/Bonnie Hoover.

With one team play remaining the Pagosa ladies are currently tied for third place gross and in fifth place net. The final team play will be held on Monday, Sept. 22, at the San Juan Country Club in Farmington.
